A recent job posting on the City of Warrensburg’s website was announced on FOX 4 News which caught the attention of second-grader Gillian Glackin.  She was so interested that she decided to apply for the position.

In a letter addressed to Human Resources, Gillian wrote, “It sounds really fun and I would love to design and run an entire city.”  She went on to write, “I am good at solving problems because I do it all the time when I help my friends at recess.  I have had a lemonade stand the last two summers and I think I did a pretty good job talking to customers and made a lot of money for toys.  I don’t have a college degree yet but I am working on it.”

Barbara Carroll, Director of Community Development, read the letter and responded to Glackin.

“It is amazing that as a second grader she was watching the news and our job posting created such interest and enthusiasm for her,” stated Carroll.  “Her letter was very well written with good grammar and spelling, and that is very impressive for a second grader.  I invited her to visit Warrensburg during a school break and be our City Planner for the Day.   This was a great opportunity for her to work with staff, visit other departments and learn more about working for a city.”

On December 20th, Glackin reported for work and started her day with a visit to the Warrensburg Police Department for her employee badge followed by a meeting with council members Baird Brock and Don Butterfield.  The next stop was checking out City Hall and settling into her office.  All the while, she was followed by FOX 4 News reporter Sean McDowell to chronicle her experience for a news report that evening.

“I got business cards and a hard hat for an inspection,” said Glackin.  “My name showed up on the phone and I even get to be on tv!”

The day’s activities also included information about city planning, doing a site plan review, meeting with the Parks and Recreation Director to discuss the Parks Master Plan, a tour of the West Sewer Treatment Plant and Fire Station 1, and a downtown façade grant check presentation to Impulse Boutique.

“Gillian was so excited when she got a letter inviting her to be the City Planner for the Day.  She can’t wait until break is over so that she can give a full report to her class about her experiences and share pictures,” stated Kimberly Glackin, Gillian’s mother.  “There were so many wonderful opportunities that the City of Warrensburg so graciously offered my girl.  I just can’t thank you enough!”
